Recently, a friend of mine told me that he is sick of taxes, tolls and big government in Maryland but has no problem with same-sex marriage.  This is a common view among many fiscal conservatives and young Americans.  But the belief that government can be socially liberal while being fiscally conservative is completely unrealistic as it is a statistical fact that states that are socially liberal are always fiscally liberal.  In order for conservatives to be ultimately successful, in Maryland and across the country, we must embrace true conservatism; which is both fiscal and social.  We must work together to defeat same-sex marriage if we ever hope to have a conservative government in Maryland.

Of all 50 states, 30 projected a budget deficit for 2013 (60%).  Out of the 8 states that allow gay marriage, 7 out of 8 projected deficits (87%).  The one state with a balanced budget was Iowa, who has already removed three of the Supreme Court justices who approved their SSM law and will most likely repeal the law in 2013. Of the states that have a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, only 53% projected a deficit.  It is fact that socially conservative states have smaller, more manageable governments that require fewer taxes, fewer tolls and less regulation.

Gay marriage is obviously not a direct cause of a budget deficit.  It is, however, a direct indicator of how liberal a state has become.  For these states, a balanced budget is an impossible accomplishment due to a deeply empowered democrat party.  In Maryland, gay marriage will solidify our state as a far-left utopia.  Conservatives will flee the state, extreme leftists will move in, and Maryland conservatives will have little hope of ever gaining traction.

On the contrary, standing united against same-sex marriage may allow us to reach groups of voters that were previously untouchable by conservatives and Republicans.  Minority communities, especially the African-American community, stand firmly against gay marriage.  By providing sharp contrast on an important social issue, we may be able to finally begin wearing down the Democrat’s extreme advantage among minorities.

Our Founders were the greatest conservatives who ever lived and they ascribed equally to a belief in small government and to our religious heritage.  George Washington said it best when he said, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports.”  True conservatism means standing up for both small government and traditional values.  Embrace conservatism with me and let’s defeat O’Malley’s far-left social agenda.
