The below letter was sent to members of the house judiciary committee that will vote TODAY on HB175 the bill that will legalize same-sex marriage in Maryland:

Members of the Committee,

Much of the argument in favor of same-sex marriage is based on the notion of equal rights.  The argument that because homosexuals cannot marry each other, they do not have the same rights as heterosexuals.  Other than anecdotal stories from individual homosexual couples, this was the sentiment that was consistently repeated throughout the Senate and House hearings on same-sex marriage legislation.

The case, however, is that homosexuals and heterosexuals have completely equal rights in the state of Maryland, and across the United States of America.  Every man has the right to marry a woman.  Every woman has the right to marry a man.  This is what marriage is, and every American citizen has equal access to it.

What the gay lobby is asking for is to redefine a basic human institution to grant them special rights.  It is similar to a man demanding that he be allowed to bear, and give birth to, a child; in that this is a situation where someone is trying to change something fundamentally human in order to give them what they think they deserve.  Every American has the right to the basic human institutions that our heritage and history have been built upon.  No one, however, has the right to redefine these institutions for their personal benefit.

Delegate Luiz Simmons of Montgomery County, a proponent of same-sex marriage, opened his testimony Friday by insulting the Eastern shore and sounding strikingly similar to Benito Mussolini saying that because God has not signed up to testify we cannot know where he stands on same-sex marriage.  His main point was that “one’s right to swing their arm, ends where an other’s nose begins,” and that a Christian’s right to believe in marriage ends when it infringes on the rights of homosexuals to marry.

Mr. Simmons’ application of that sentiment is ridiculous but the statement itself applies directly to this situation.  Homosexuals have the right to exist and the right to privacy.  They do not, however, have the right to redefine marriage.  Their right to perform homosexual activity ends when the sanctity of marriage and our Christian heritage begins.  They have the right to live their lives.  They do not have the right to change our lives.  They do not have the right to force our businesses to provide services for their ceremonies.  They do not have the right to teach the so-called benefits of a homosexual lifestyle to a fifth grader in sexual education.  If one really believes that “one’s right to swing their arm, ends where an other’s nose begins,” than they will adamantly oppose HB 175.
